In connection to one of my first blog posts, former San Francisco 49er Eric Reid has been signed by the Carolina Panthers. This is significant as Reid was the first player to kneel alongside his former teammate Colin Kaepernick during the national anthem. Reid, like Kaepernick, had alleged that NFL owners were colluding to try and keep him out of the league. Reid had established himself as one of the premier safeties in the league and it was a joke that it took him this long to find a place to play as he would have been a valued commodity had it not been for the political views of the vast majority of NFL owners. It is extremely interesting to see what topics NFL owners take issue with as every single year players with domestic violence charges get signed without problem but players with strong moral stances get punished. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tried to avoid any questions about former defensive end Greg Hardy who was signed following one of the most brutal and detailed allegations of domestic violence the NFL has ever seen ( https://randomnerds.com/the-greg-hardy-domestic-assault-case-for-the-well-intentioned-semi-informed-layperson/). Ray Rice only lost his job because there was actual video evidence of him hitting his wife, however other plays commit similar acts in secret and keep their jobs. The NFL obviously does not have morals similar to all Americans, but there is a significant amount of people who stand with the NFL and its owners and that is depressing. As we continue to speak about these issues in class it is encouraging to see a leader off the field and in his community back on the field. Reid is still kneeling during the anthem and still fighting against inequality and it is refreshing to see somebody stick by their morals.
