One of the saddest and most disgusting local news stories that has broken in recent memory is the tragic murder of Botham Jean in his own apartment by a police officer. Another case of unarmed African American man being murdered by a white police officer, however this was not after some petty crime or during a traffic violation, this was a man inside of his own home and an officer so "unaware" of her surroundings that she felt it was appropriate to murder another person in cold blood. This story went from local to national news instantly and one of the worst parts about the entire ordeal is that on the day of the man's funeral, news organizations found it acceptable to release news that marijuana was found in his apartment. This kind of immoral and irresponsible journalism is sickening as it had nothing to do with the story at hand. Jean was the victim in this case and people in newsrooms across the state felt it was appropriate to try and tarnish his memory and create him to be some sort of criminal in the minds of news viewers. Sadly we live in a country with limited media literacy and because of this news organizations can easily shift the minds of their viewers with slick tactics or sometimes just flat out lies. In the FOX era of news becoming everyday 24/7 propaganda, it is sad that a man minding his own business in his home could be brought into the spotlight for such a negative reason. Jean's family was outraged by the story about his marijuana coming out on the day of his funeral and how could anybody with a sense of compassion or moral compass blame them for their anger. An attorney in the FOX 4 article even entertains how the marijuana could be used as an explanation for the case and that is one of the most angering things I have ever read. Marijuana had absolutely nothing to do with the death of Botham Jean, it was the fault of an irresponsible and incoherent police officer with freedom to fire a deadly weapon whenever she felt like it.
